Novel methylation. III. Methylation of tertiary amines such as pyridine and isoquinoline with alkyl carboxylates

The alkylation of tertiary amines, namely, 2-dimethylaminoethanol, triethylamine, pyridine and isoquinoline with various alkyl carboxylates was investigated. This reaction afforded the corresponding quarternary ammonium salts, e.g., methylation of 2-dimethyl-aminoethanol with methyl salicylate.     

Magnetic anisotropy of europium in iron garnet

Magnetization measurements have been made of single crystals of europium iron garnet (EuIG), Ga-doped EuIG and Al-doped EuIG. Cubic anisotropy constants K₁ and K₂ have been evaluated from the magnetization curves. Temperature dependence and concentration dependence of the anisotropy are compared with the theory by Foglio and van Vleck.     

Biexciton decay and multimagnon sideband in emission spectra of CsMnF3

Emission spectra of intrinsic and impurity-trapped excitons and their side- bands have been measured in CsMnF₃ by a polarized time-resolved spectroscopy. From a biexcitonic decay of an emission an exciton- exciton interaction was found to be very small in contrast with those of MnF₂ and KMnF₃. Multimagnon sidebands have been assigned with the aid of calculation of magnon density of states.     

Studies on the syntheses of heterocyclic compounds—DXCI : Total synthesis of (±)-cherylline and corgoine through quinonoid intermediates

Acid catalysed cyclisation of N - (4′ - benzyloxy - β - methoxyphenethyl) - 3 - benzyloxy - 4 - methoxy - N-methylbenzylamine (18) gave (±)-cherylline (1), one of the Amaryllidaceae alkaloids. Fusion of 4-hydroxybenzyl alcohol (22) with 1,2,3,4-tetrahydroisoquinoline (24) also gave corgoine (5).
